Here is the latest attempt at a new bag design. I quilted three pieces on each side. The stripe fabric has a coordinating stripe to the solid. The bag is 8 inches wide by 9 inches tall. It is lined and has magnetic closures. There are also four pockets on the inside. The bag went together fairly easy, but still is not quite what I was looking for.

I have also been busy with other sewing. I split a design for a lady to use in her smaller hoop. I hemmed three pair of pants, I made new straps for a formal dress, and I cut out another bag.

I have been working this weekend to finish these hats for my nephew. I have two more to go. Hats are not the easiest thing to embroider, but with the new hoop I bought they have been easier this time.

I have had a week of both progress and set backs. This is another idea for bags for the craft shows that I am working on. The first quilted bags I did ended up way too small when I sewed the outsides up. I decided to try putting two of them together. I have had them laying here all week trying to think how to fix them. So once again I have bags laying everywhere half finished.

It seems everytime I get one thing done two more come in. I am very thankful for the business, but I am feeling a bit anxious because I am just not good with so much work piled up and so many unfinished projects.

Last week I purchased a new hoop it all to assist me in embroidering hats for my nephew. The hoop has made it a bit easier, but the first design I embroidered was not right for the hats. I re-worked the design and today did three hats. I have 8 more to do.

I exercised every morning except today. I woke up with a headache so I went back to bed and slept until 8 a.m. Lessons have went fairly well this week. We stayed on task pretty much all the week.

I cut out four aprons today and I am excited about the material I used. I need to figure out how many weeks until the first craftshow and how much I want to take to it. Then I need to make a plan. That and all the added sewing that people keep bringing to me. God has blessed me and I need to be thankful and do my best with the gifts He gives me!

Aren't these blues and yellows just delicious? These are for more bags. I have 8 of the pieced bags quilted. Next I have to put them together with their lining and handles.

I got up with more resolve this morning to get myself together. I feel like I have been floundering in so many ways. I exercised, read my scriptures, baked, got all the lessons done for the day, cleaned the kitchen, finished a lady's mending, ripped a broken zipper out of a pair of pants, made three meals, went for a walk, quilted the bags, and knitted on a pair of socks. Oh, and did 2 loads of laundry. Next, I am going to get into bed at a decent hour.

This has been a week that I seemed to have done a lot of work, but don't have a lot to show for it. I sewed almost everyday. I just don't have a sense of accomplishment. I think there are several reasons for this. The major one being all the half done projects I seem to have covering all my work surfaces. Here is the pile of half done bags I have. I hope to finish them soon!

Do you ever dream? I don't mean REM type, I mean dream as in think thoughts of what you would like your life to be like? I seem to find my thoughts wandering towards dreams lately. Dreams of becoming a quiet, gentle lady like woman. I am not. Dreams of having a body that would walk gracefully when I moved. I do not. Dreams of having a more positive attitude on things. Mine is not always. I struggle with so many things in my life. I struggle with selfishness. Sometimes I would just love to spend the day doing things for me. Now mind you that is not how things work. I don't live out these selfish dreams, but it bothers me the same to have them. I guess my biggest problem lately is not having enough hours in my days. I seem to always have ten more things on my to do list for some one else. I remember a time when my children were younger when I could capture the moments of the day with them. I remember sitting in a rocking chair reading for hours on end to our daughter. I remember slower paced days when it didn't always seem I was rushing from one thing to the next. It hit me today that even though we do Bible study together 5 days a week we don't sing hymns anymore because we seem to have to hurry on with school work. I was trying to fit baking and walking into my days and I just don't seem to find the hours. The strange thing is we are not running the roads half as much as we did the last several years. I guess I just need to work on my priorities.

Last night I finished this second wristlet. This is the one I revised the pattern for. It has a pocket inside. I made it several inches larger. This one looks better than the first, but I don't think I will make these for my up coming craft shows. They are very labor intensive. I could never make enough in time and they would have to cost too much for any one to be interested in them.

I had to do a little re-altering of the alteration to the black dress when the lady came to try it on. That done I cut out bags for the craft shows. I have some one coming this afternoon to pick up sewing. I also have a towel to embroidery, a bag to repair for the church, and more bags to cut out for the craft shows.

Since my last post I have cleaned my sewing room, put elastic in a skirt for Captain Kitty, altered the black dress, made an apron, and am half way through my revised wristlet.

This is the apron I made. It has three pockets in the front. It was all very easy to make except the ties. The seaming on the ties is very intensive and I may have to find another way to do them. You fold under and press 3/8 inch seam on the two long sides and one of the short sides of two ties. Then you fold under the raw edge of that and make the hem 1/4 inch. This takes a lot of time and burnt fingers. I think that I will either cut out four of those pieces and make a tube or I will do a rolled edge on it.

In honor of today being the first day of Autumn the children and I painted wooden pumpkins, leaves, and acorns.

This is my favorite time of year!

A while back I purchased some new bed pillows. I didn't realize when I did that they were bigger than normal size. Captain Chaos has been having a difficult time keeping his pillow cases on. Yesterday I finally got around to making him some bigger pillow cases.

I have had this cool lizard material in my stash for over a year. These pillow cases were real easy to make. I think I had around two yards of this material. I just folded it over and cut it in half. Then I took half the material and seamed up the open side and one end of it. Last I folded over a hem on the remaining open end. Tada! I did this to both pieces and in less than 15 minutes I had two pillow cases.

I also cut out a khaki skirt for myself Monday afternoon. Last night I finished it. The last thing I did in the sewing room last night was to rip the seams out of the black dress I am altering for a woman. I hope today I will get to finish the alteration on the black dress, but the children having singing school and I have a Bernina Club meeting. I will try.

Scissor Fobs

Step 1: You need some type of string, wire, thread etc. to use. I chose the nylon beading thread. You need to measure the length of the scissors with the thread and then pull out double that amount and cut it off. The thread needs to be twice as long as the length of the scissors.

Step 2: I liked the idea of a cap on the fob to put over the end of my scissors. You don't have to do this. This is a knitting needle cap, used to put on the end of a knitting needle. They come in different sizes and you can usually find them with the knitting needles in the stores. I threaded my nylon through a needle and then punched the needle through the rubber of the cap. You pull the single strand through the cap having half the nylon on each side of the hole you punched.

Step 3: You then get to have fun. Pick out beads! I like to lay mine out in order so I can see how I want to put them on.

Step 4: Because I used nylon thread I did not need to use a beading needle. I just start putting the beads on. It is important to put both end of the thread through the beads.

Step 5: When you get almost all the beads on the nylon you need to put a clip. Because I made this one for a small pair of scissors I used a lobster claw. You need to put any type of clip you want that will attach to the handle of your scissors.

Step 6: After you put the rest of the beads on you need to some how secure the thread. Because I used nylon with mine, I used a crimp bead. The first time I put the crimp bead on the beads I had chose on the end all had holes too big and it did not secure them. I had to go back and change the last beads on my fob and put a smaller bead on the end so the crimp bead would hold it all in place.

This shows the crimp bead on the end.

Step 8: Clip scissor fob on to the scissors! It is really easy and fun.

Last night I pulled out some material and began to think about what I need to make for the craft shows. I always make a seven inch wide "trip" bag that sells really well. I will probably make some of those, but I am sort of burn out making them. I have had Simplicity 5184 pattern for a couple of years meaning to try it. It's an accesory pattern for wristlets. Last night I cut the pattern out and began sewing view G. Tonight I finished it. I am not sure if I am happy with it. It was easy to put together. I think I would like to make it a couple of inches bigger. I think I would also like to make a pocket inside. Some type of place you could put your ID. I think I will tweek the pattern and try again.

I also got a little crazy with the beading and made a necklace, earrings, and bracelet that I wore to church today. I have had these beading supplies for some time and I have to be careful because I could really spend a lot of time doing beading. I must sew, I must sew!

The jeans are finished. They turned out really nice. I hope they are what she wanted.

I have three doll dresses I have to get made for charity. I have a box of hats I need to embroidery for my nephew. I have a dress to alter and a baby outfit to embroidery. I think that is all the outside sewing I have for now. I bought myself some khaki material last month for a new skirt. I also have 2 craft shows coming up this fall and I need to get cracking sewing items for those.

At our sewing guild meeting Thursday we made these scissor fobs. We had a great time! (Right Linda?) The lady who showed us how to do this had brought samples and they were so pretty that I just had to make another out of green beads!

This is the one I made Friday. I have several more pair of scissors that just might need one of these! I could get addicted to beading. I really don't need another hobby though.

It has rained for three days. I usually don't mind rain, but the natives are getting restless here. Captain Chaos goes out every break in the rain he can find. He has been learning to jump his bike off his older brother's ramp. He saw this spider web beside the basketball hoop and begged to take a picture of it. He thought it was great with all the water dropletts on it. Tonight was their first night back to Awana and they were happy to being going again. Tomorrow singing school starts back up. They can hardly wait.

In my sewing room I have been working on a pair of jeans for a girl. She has never owned a pair because she is chubby. They brought me a pattern that is fit for a very slender girl. I am making the jeans, but I worry. I worry she thinks that they will make her look like the picture on the front of the pattern. Sigh...I was an obese child. My Momma tells me I ballooned out at five years old. I have never been anything else my whole life. I have blocked out a lot of my past memories because of how people treated me. I have tried everything to get rid of the weight. I am so thankful that I have a God who loves me for who I am inside. He blessed me with a husband that loves me no matter what. He gave us three beautiful children. He has sent many friends in my life who look beyond my outward appearance. I pray this girl will find this type of life.

My machine is embroidering out a design as I type this. A lady called this afternoon and wanted me to digitize a design by tomorrow. They paid me extra to rush it. It has actually gone better than I expected because of the lessons I have been working on at the Quarterly Software Society that Bernina is offering. I have learned a lot from these lessons.

This is a dresser scarf that my grandmother embroidered sometime before 1962. It has been loved and used often. The threads are not holding up to the use and detergents that were used on it back in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. I decided to hand embroidery my interpretation of her work on a tea towel.

This is my tea towel after I completed it this weekend. I am debating whether I want to crochet the edging on it since I plan to use this towel.

Here is a close up of one of the roses. I just drew the outline with pencil. I tried to make them similar to the ones on the orignial. I embroidered the shading in a similar format as she had done. This is not an identical copy, but I enjoyed the way it turned out.

I have been settling back in a bit better this week. School work is getting done and I am getting some sewing done in the evenings. Housework is...well, we still have to figure out how to get that one in.

I cut out a pair of jeans I am making for a girl. I also finished Captain Kitty's skirt and shirt.

This was a $2.50 t-shirt from A.C. Moore. I appliqued the flower on there and then added lace to the sleeves and bottom per her request. I decided the ribbed neck did not go with this girly trim so I slit it in two places and sewed it down to the inside making it look like the interfacing. It is a cute outfit in real life, the picture doesn't do it justice. The whole outfit cost $2.50. The material for the skirt and the lace were given to me for free. I was thinking about some pieces I have in my closet that I don't like for various reasons and am pondering "remaking" them to something I might wear. If not I am going to donate them to charity. I am feeling like parring down and starting to nest for winter.

One of the reasons I didn't get much sewing done is that we went away Monday. It was the General's first day off since June and we decided we needed to get out of town. We headed to my folks thinking we would go to the lake and spend the day.

This a view across one of my folks pasture fields. It rained the whole way up the road and when we arrived it had started raining there. So, the lake was out. I have lived in Virginia my whole life and there are several places I have never gotten to visit. One of those is Luray Caverns. I ask the General if we could go there instead. He liked the idea and even my folks decided to come along.

The caverns where breath taking in their beauty. This is the awesome reflection in the pool. The water looked like glass and the reflection was so perfect we thought it was stalgtites.

With my love of fabric, this formation touched my heart. This is called the bathtowel of Luray. It looks like a piece of linen material drapped from the ceiling. It is amazing. The only hard part was the last part of the path goes up very steep. My parents and I had a slight bit of difficulty at the end. My stamina just isn't back up to what it was pre-surgery.

I didn't get much sewing done over the weekend. I took the cuffs off and moved them up 2 inches on a lady's sweater for her. I also worked on an embroidery on a dress for a lady.

This dress jacket had long sleeves and she wanted them shortened. Then she wanted some embroidery to be added to the jacket and dress. I really liked the dress as it was. I did add some embroidery and some crystals in the embroidery. You can not see the crystals in this picture.

I tried to take a picture close up to show the crystals, but you still can't see them as well. They sparkled very prettily in the light.

I also worked on Captain Kitty's skirt. I only have the hem to finish and the top to embellish.

I finished hemming the third pair of pants for a man. I didn't get a lot of other sewing done this weekend. I was feeling bad Saturday so I took it easy. Sunday we had our church's annual picnic in the afternoon. We went after the General came home from work. We did do art for our school this weekend. I had received an idea from a friend and the children were keen on doing it as their art for this week.

We bought several of these sewn memo books.

Then we traced 3 times around the cover onto cardstock. We cut out the cardstock. We stamped one of the cardstock with our favorite stamps. We used some of that tape with the red backing, it's very sticky two sided tape, to attach the stamped piece of cardstock to the front of the memo book. We attached both pieces of the cardstock to the back giving it support. We are now going to give these as presents to people.

I was thinking about a way to incorporate fabric into this project. It was a simple project, yet very enjoyable and it makes a nice gift if you personalize the colors or stamped image to the recipient.

We have added almost all of school back into the days. It seems to be going well. I chose a lot of curriculum that is self explanitory.

This afternoon I hemmed another pair of pants. I also cut out a pattern for a shirt for myself, and cut out the material for a skirt for Captain Kitty.

This is some older material that was in my stash. Captain Kitty has decided she likes blue. I cut this out to make a simple skirt with elastic. I am going to look for a plain t-shirt to match it and then frill it up. I was thinking of using some of the material to make ruffles on the sleeves and hem or maybe to put an applique on it.

This is a card I made two days ago. I tried fusing material to the card stock. Next I stamped my image on another piece of card stock and taped it to the card covered with material. Not as cute as Linda's, but, I am working on it. Linda over at craft apple has a tutorial showing how she makes her great fabric cards.

Yesterday I didn't do much sewing. I embroidered a name on a towel. I finally embroidered my first lesson from the Quarterly Software Society. It needs some tweaking.

Today I hemmed a pair of pants. I guess for two weeks post-op after a major surgery I am doing pretty good. I would like to do more, but time will solve that.

This is what I have recently done to the vinyl bags.
This is as close to what I want them to look like that I could get. If you look at the red one you will see the stitches looking not so good. No matter what I tried I could not get it to feed well to get a good stitch. These are better than the last several tries though!

I made two cards to send to people tonight. I am totally exhausted. I haven't been sleeping well, I am not taking pain medicine any more. I would love a good nights sleep. A girl can dream!

I said yesterday that I would post a picture of what Lisa made and brought me in the hospital. This is a beaded book marker, with green beads of course! Since we all know green is my favorite color.

I have actually been sewing a little over the past several days. I hemmed the sleeves of a jacket on one day. The next day I hemmed the bottom, the jacket was lined so that took a bit of manipulation. I have been working on the clear bags the lady wanted. I am so not happy with them. I have tried everything. I tried taking a store bought cosmetic bag and replacing the zipper (she wants a certain color that you can't buy them in). That was not possible. The bags you buy at the store are made on some type of special machine and do not have a seam in the bottom. I couldn't get the zipper in. I tried cutting the bottom off the bag and redoing both the top and bottom and I couldn't get it back together to look right. I tried buying some clear vinyl and making them from scratch. To me they just look bad. I am wits end. If any one has any idea how to make clear plastic cosmetic bags in 2 1/2 inch by 4 inch dimensions with a zipper please please help me!

Over the years since we acquired our first computer I have been a member of several e-mail loops and now I love blogging and the blogging community. I have been blessed with meeting and getting to know women I otherwise would never have known. I often feel unworthy of the love they have shown me. Yesterday was one of those days I felt unworthy. I received a package from a dear dear blogging lady who I have come to think of as a close friend. I have never met her, but she went out of her way to send me a package. Not just any package, but one she filled with things she chose with me in mind. How wonderful is that. It really lifted my spirit. Thank you Linda. If you want to get to know her and see for your self how wonderful she is you can visit her blog here.

While I was in the hospital I got a visit from another lady and her step-daughter. A lady who I had never met in real life, whom I only knew from this blogging community. How special is that to find someone who lives in your own city and find your have so much in common through blogging. Then for that person to take time out of their life and come and see you just when you needed a lift of spirit. She also made me something keeping in mind what she knew of me from my blog and brought it to me. I will post a picture of it tomorrow. Thank you so much Lisa and Emily for coming to see me. If you want to get to know Lisa and see what a great person she is you can visit her here.

There is another groups of ladies whom I have been blessed to get to know over the years. We have been on the same e-mail loop for five or six years. We came together with an interest in similar teaching styles for our children and have blossomed into a community of sisters. We have welcomed new children into each others families. We have watched over each other in times of trouble and rejoiced with each other in times of happiness. Words will never express what I feel towards this group of ladies I have never met in real life, but with whom I have shared so much of my life. Thank you Ann, Linda B, Heather, Pattie, Jamie, Linda, Denise, and Laura.

Well, let's just say I know now why I have been working on the other afghan 3 years! I am still sewing the blocks together with yarn. It's just Granny Squares and not to many of those, but this thing is very time consuming. It is in shades of pink, white, and brown. I feel a craving for ice cream working on it (LOL).

Speaking of ice cream Monday was Captain Chaos' birthday.

Here is my baby. He is now 9. I thank God everyday for these little people He has lent to us to help raise. CC is such a sweet boy. He is so kind hearted. He wanted an aquarium and sharks for his birthday. So we got him a 20 gallon tank with some sort of shark type fish, a dragon fish, and a dinosaur fish. All these "boy" type fish...whoda known. We always let our children pick a restaraunt to go out to for their birthday meal. We don't eat out often. He of course wanted to go out to a seafood restaraunt and have shark, squid, and octopus for dinner. Most of the restaraunts in our area that specialize in seafood are closed on Mondays. The General got the great idea of going to Kabuki, a Japanese seafood and steakhouse where they make your meal in front of you. Since his sister is away at camp and his brother had soccer it was just the three of us. He loved it. He got to be the center of attention, being the last child he doesn't always get that especially with two siblings of very forcible character. He also loved watching the chef make the meal. The chef was so nice to our little birthday boy! I am being very good about following my restricted eating and movement since the surgery. I am doing pretty good. I ask the General today what he thought of me doing a little sewing tomorrow. He told me he thought I could do it, if I promised to only do it in short spurts and lay down in between. Of course I agreed. Yea, so if I ever get to sleep (slight problem still with insomnia) when I wake up I am going to sew.

Yesterday was a pretty good day. I got my flour sack dishtowels out and drew designs on four or five of them that I want to embroidery. I cleaned out my basket of yarns. I got out an afghan that was closest to completion and finished it.

This is a vertical striped afghan that I made from scraps. Some I had leftover from projects and some my Momma had given me. A few years ago my Momma brought me all her crochet supplies. Her arthritis has been getting to her and she found she just couldn't crochet any more. I started putting together another crocheted afghan made from her scraps this morning. I am not getting as much done today because I feel a bit more pain and very very tired today. Since my other afghan is blocks that just need to be sewn together hopefully I can get that done today.

Just a little note to let my friends know I am home. The surgery went well. I am on a lot of restrictions because of my history and what the surgeon had to do this time. I can't sit up for long periods of time so no sewing machine sewing for now. I did tell the General this will drive me crazy so he suggested I knit or crochet something. I have several WIPs going that I might can work on. I also have some dishtowels I have had stored for over a year with the idea to hand embroidery them. Now seems a good time.

I can't thank y'all enough for praying for me. I could feel the prayer surrounding me on Tuesday and it really helped me get through this.

There are couple of things I need to do better the next time I make this pattern. One is I need to hand sew the binding to the inside, it would look better. The other is find a way to do the binding on the end of the inside pocket to make it look neater. Besides that this was a very easy pattern to do. It only took me a couple of hours to make. I really like it. The pattern can be found at www.sewinggarden.com.

Yesterday I actually did shop till I dropped. I took the children in the morning and we went to two stores. Did you know an 8 year old boy can take almost 1 hour to try on tennis shoes and make up his mind? It took him longer to pick one pair of shoes then it took Captain Kitty and I to pick all the clothes we tried on and bought. After the General got off work he and I went shopping alone at four stores. Did you know I hate to shop?

At 1:30 a.m. Captain Cool called for me to come pick him up. He was finally home. His week in Santo Domingo went great. He and I stayed up until after 3 a.m. talking. Sometimes he and I have our moments, but I missed him and it was nice to have him home.

Today I refused to leave the house. I finished up some sewing. I finished the four pieces I have been working on. I embroidered a jacket. I thought this was an interesting tip that may help some one. A woman called the other day, she had gotten my name and number from my favorite sewing shop. She had scorched a very nice suit jacket with an iron. They suggested she ask me to embroidery over the place. The jacket already had tone on tone embroidery aroudn the cuffs. I took a similar design and changed it to match the shape of the embroidery already on the jacket, took thread that matched the color of the jacket and did an embroidery on the back to mimick the sleeves and cover the spot.

Scorched spot on jacket back.

Fixed with embroidery.

I couldn't sleep last night. Nerves. I got up and cut out some things. One of the things I finally got around to cutting out was my new billfold/wallet.

I am using this pattern from the company Favorite Things. I love this green material with small roses. I have enough left that I may use it in making a new purse for autumn. I have never made this pattern before so it will be a learning experience for me.

I went to the surgeon today. My surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday. I have so much to do ahead of time. I did the finishing work on the green dress and black skirt for the lady who came for her fitting last night. They are ready to go. I have to finish up the linen shirt and skirt. I want to get them done by Friday. I need to make another pair of pj pants for Captain Kitty. I need to finish hemming a jacket and making those clear bags for a lady. I have a jacket to embroidery for some one. Some one brought me three pair of pants to hem, but they are cordourey so I think I can wait on those. I hope to finish my wallet. I need to go shopping this weekend for shoes and clothes for the children. I need a new nightgown or two.

The good thing is that the busier I stay the less time I have to dwell on the surgery. I guess if you have never had surgery it isn't so bad because you don't know what to expect. Since I am about to have my tenth surgery and my 5th in the last four years I know what I am facing and I don't look forward to it. I would much rather be happily oblivious.

Tuesday, August 01, 2006

I have been working on four pieces for a lady. Yesterday I put together the last. It is a green sundress.

I forgot to take a picture of the back. The back criscrosses. It is not thin straps, but a full back that has two pieces and they cross each other. There is a side zipper.

This evening she is coming over to try on all the pieces for button and hook placement and hemming.

Last night I had my last serger class for my new machine. I love my sewing shop. They are always so good about helping me.

I seem to be having problems keeping up with things these days. There just seems to be so much to do. Oh well, I will get it all done eventually.

Tomorrow, I go to the surgeon to schedule my surgery. If you remember me please pray.
